Mont-Blanc in Summer: What to Do Around the Massif (2026 Guide)
The Mont-Blanc massif isn't just for winter. Mountain trains, glaciers, turquoise lakes, hikes and paragliding flights: here's everything you can do around Mont-Blanc in the summer season.
Mont-Blanc, an underrated summer destination
Mont-Blanc is often associated with skiing, but the massif may be even more spectacular in summer: blooming alpine meadows, turquoise lakes, glaciers reachable by train and legendary hikes. In summer, accommodation rates are lower, crowds are thinner, and the light on the roof of Europe (4,808 m) is simply unforgettable. Here's what to do around the massif from Saint-Gervais.
Getting up high without being a mountaineer
The Tramway du Mont-Blanc & the Nid d'Aigle (2,372 m)
This is France's highest rack railway, and it departs right nearby, at Le Fayet/Saint-Gervais (about ten minutes from the apartment). It climbs up to the Nid d'Aigle, gateway to the Bionnassay glacier, facing dizzying panoramas. An outing accessible to everyone, perfect for families.
The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m)
From Chamonix (30 min), the cable car lifts you to nearly 3,842 m in 20 minutes. A 360° view of Mont-Blanc, the "Step into the Void" and a horizon of Swiss and Italian peaks. Book online and go up early in the morning, before the clouds form.
The Mer de Glace & the Montenvers train
The little red Montenvers train leads to the largest glacier in France (7 km). An ice cave, views of the Drus: an iconic site, and a striking record of glacial retreat.
Hiking around the massif
The Pays du Mont-Blanc has more than 200 km of marked trails for all levels: the panoramic Saint-Gervais plateau for families, the Col du Jaillet, the superb Lac de la Girotte, or stretches of the famous Tour du Mont-Blanc for seasoned walkers. See our hiking guide.
Swimming with Mont-Blanc as a backdrop
Yes, you can swim with Mont-Blanc in the background. Lac de Passy (the largest body of water in the Pays du Mont-Blanc, with a leisure park), Lac Vert with its emerald waters, or the Combloux biotope lake: plenty of refreshing spots less than 15 minutes away. Discover the lakes & activities.
Thrills & relaxation
For thrill-seekers, paragliding from Plaine-Joux or Chamonix offers an unforgettable flight over the valley. For relaxation, the Thermes de Saint-Gervais (in Le Fayet) offer hot baths and a spa, ideal after a day of walking. And for cyclists, the legendary Tour de France mountain passes are within pedaling distance.
