Why visit Chamonix from Saint-Gervais?

Saint-Gervais and Chamonix are only 30 kilometers apart, about thirty minutes by car via the N205. This makes our apartment an ideal base for exploring Chamonix, the world capital of mountaineering and one of the most spectacular tourist destinations in the Alps.

Unlike staying in Chamonix itself (often expensive and crowded), staying in Saint-Gervais gives you peace and quiet and Savoyard authenticity, with Chamonix within reach as a day trip.

Chamonix highlights

1. The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) - ⭐ Top priority

The Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you up to 3,842 m altitude in 20 minutes from central Chamonix. At the top: a 360° view of Mont-Blanc (4,808 m), the Mont-Blanc massif and the Swiss and Italian Alps.

Tips: Book your ticket online (on the Mont-Blanc Télécabine website) at least 2-3 days ahead in high season. Arrive early in the morning to beat the clouds that build up in the afternoon. Bring a warm jacket even in summer (it's often -5°C or colder at the summit).

2. La Mer de Glace - A legendary glacier

Reachable from Chamonix via the Montenvers rack railway, the Mer de Glace is the largest glacier in France (7 km long, 200 m deep). An ice cave is carved into the glacier every year.

Note: The glacier is retreating by about 10 meters a year. It's a striking phenomenon to observe and document for future generations.

3. Central Chamonix

The pedestrian center of Chamonix is worth a stroll: its outdoor gear shops, terrace cafés with views of the Aiguille du Midi, the mountain museums (Musée Alpin, Espace Tairraz) and the unique atmosphere of an international mountain town.

4. Hike: Le Plan de l'Aiguille

From the first stop of the Aiguille du Midi cable car (Plan de l'Aiguille, 2,317 m), a 2h30 panoramic hike follows the massif with a constant view of Mont-Blanc. Accessible with the same cable car ticket.

5. L'Espace Découverte - A glaciology museum

For a cultural and scientific take on the Mont-Blanc massif: exhibits on glaciology, the history of mountaineering and climate change. Ideal on a rainy day.

How to get from Saint-Gervais to Chamonix

By car (30 min)

From Saint-Gervais, head toward Sallanches (12 km), then follow the N205 toward Chamonix (25 km). Park at Aiguilles Rouges or at the SNCF train station car park, just outside the pedestrian center. Allow 30-40 min depending on traffic (heavy in season).

By shuttle or train

From Sallanches station (12 km from Saint-Gervais), regional trains serve Chamonix (45 min). In winter, Ski Bus shuttles can also connect the resorts. Check with the Saint-Gervais tourist office.

Planning your day

• 8:30: Depart Saint-Gervais for Chamonix
• 9:00: Arrival, first cable car up the Aiguille du Midi (to avoid queues)
• 11:00: Back down, stroll around central Chamonix
• 12:30: Lunch in the center (many restaurants with views)
• 14:00: Visit the Mer de Glace via the Montenvers (1h30-2h on site)
• 17:00: Head back to Saint-Gervais (watch for traffic in the late afternoon)
